The view westward across The San Elijo Lagoon toward US 101 and the Pacific Ocean at dawn. The Lagoon is one of the largest remaining coastal wetlands in San Diego County. Shell middens have been found there that date back 8500 years. Remnants of the endangered coastal sage scrub ecosystem meet the salt marsh in the uplands, and because of this diversity, over 300 species of birds have been sited here. Unfortunately, Interstate 5 thunders day and night in the distance behind me.
